Hindi Numbers 1 to 100

Learning to speak, read, or write in Hindi can confuse non-native speakers. But don't let your confusion take over your abilities to master the language. Learning the Hindi numbers is as important as knowing the Hindi alphabet. They might look daunting, but a little effort and patience from your end will make you an expert in no time!

History of Hindi Numbers

Did you know that Al-Biruni played an essential role in unraveling the beauty of the Hindi numerals? Al-Biruni visited India multiple times in the 1020s. It makes sense to wonder where the numerical symbols that Al-Biruni observed came from. Al-Biruni commented in one of his famous books, "Whilst we use letters for calculation according to their numerical value, the Indians do not use letters at all for arithmetic. And just as the shape of the letters that they use for writing is different in different regions of their country, so the numerical symbols vary."

1. Brahmi Numerals

Brahmi Numerals

Vector Stock Historians believe they are all linked to the Brahmi numbers, which first appeared around the middle of the third century B.C. These Brahmi numbers were confusing since there was no place for a value system. Additionally, there were no separate symbols for the digits 2 and 3. Both were created from the sign for 1.

2. Devnagari Numerals

The Devnagari Numerals, also known as Nagari Numbers, were developed during the Gupta Period. It dates from the 7th to the 11th century A.D. The name, "writing of the gods," was thought to be the most attractive of all the numbers previously developed. Even Al-Biruni agrees, "What we (Arabs) use for numerals is a selection of the best and most regular figures in India." In this way, Devnagari Numerals were introduced to the Arab world and the rest of the globe between the 7th and 16th centuries.
